About Kristi Yamaguchi

Kristi Yamaguchi was born July 12, 1971 to a Japanese-American mother who herself was born in an internment camp in the U.S. during World War II. Kristi began skating as a young child, winning medals as a single skater and in pairs, with partner Rudy Galindo. In 1988, she and Rudy won the 1988 World Pairs gold medal, as well as U.S. Nationals.

In 1990, Kristi decided to focus on single ladies skating, and won the World Championships in 1991. With near-perfect technique, graceful artistry and consistency, Kristi thrilled U.S. and international audiences by winning the 1992 gold medal in ladies figure skating at the 1992 winter Olympics, followed by the 1992 World Championships gold medal. Skating with Stars on Ice for many years as a professional skater and competing in professional competitions, Kristi continued to win mdeals, including the gold for the World Pro Championships five times in a row between 1993-1997.

Kristi married NHL hockey player Bret Hedican in 2000, and has since given birth to two daughter, Keara in 2003 and Emma in 2005. They live near Raleigh, N.C.
